Ann's Research

Ann is studying recently isolated antibiotic resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, one of several organisms responsible for causing pneumonia. She has identified a gene that she believes is responsible for the resistance. The gene in question codes for part of a protein pump that removes materials from bacterial cells. Ann believes that the pump is removing antibiotic materials before they can break down the bacterial cell wall, making the bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
