Changing Research Environment

 

After these attacks, the US Government dramatically increased resources for biodefense and emerging infectious disease research, much of which has dual use potential. The government also increased “biosecurity” around certain types of pathogens, passing laws and regulations to limit human access to, and hopefully misuse of, potentially weaponizable agents. These new laws suddenly introduced the dilemma of how to balance national security interests with the scientific openness traditionally promoted within the life sciences community.
