Changing Research Environment

 

While there have been instances of weaponizing biological agents throughout history, it was the 2001 anthrax attacks in the U.S. that brought the issue of bioterrorism to the forefront of national security. As investigators searched for the perpetrators behind the bioterror event, officials began to question the life scientists who were conducting anthrax research. The anthrax letters served as an unfortunate reminder that the information and materials with which life scientists work can be maliciously misappropriated for harm.
