Transnational Professional Agreements

In 2005, just as the BWC signatory countries were discussing the role of codes of conduct in preventing the misuse of legitimate science, the Interacademy Panel (IAP), issued their IAP Statement on Biosecurity. As a global network of scientific societies aimed at helping its academy members work together to promote knowledge of the scientific aspects of global issues, the Statement outlines five fundamental principles that should be taken into account when drafting codes of conduct. These principles are: awareness of potential consequences, safety and security, education and information, accountability, and oversight. The Statement was signed by academies from over 60 countries.
