Biological Agents as Weapons

Bioterrorism is not a new phenomenon. Pathogens have been used as weapons for hundreds of years, dating back to the fourteenth century when Tartars purportedly threw the corpses of plague victims over the city walls of Kaffa before its siege.(Fenn 2001) In the eighteenth century, British soldiers are said to have distributed blankets used by smallpox victims to Native Americans with the intention of infecting them.(Harris 1982)
