Case Study Introduction
|
Ann and her PI are excited about the project, as it fits well with Ann’s research interests in antibiotic resistance. When they seek approval from the department chair, she expresses concern over the project’s “dual use nature,” mentioning something about the project’s potential sensitivity to public health or national security. She even warns Ann that her proposal might not get approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Ann gets extremely worried that she will be unable to pursue her research. |
- What is it about Ann’s research that prompted this reaction from the department chair?
- How would you respond if you were told that your research or a research project within a lab you oversee may be sensitive to national security? Would you know what to do as a researcher? As a biosafety professional? As a bioscience administrator?
